"The marks humans leave are too often scars" - Augustus Waters.

As Hazel knew it was coming, Augustus died. She didn't have to worry about leaving him alone anymore, so, she didn't. Of course, she was sad, more angry than sad. Angry at the universe or whatever that took him away, not mad at the cancer, because Augustus' body was practically made of it.
The pain that she felt when she knew he was gone was even worse than any physical pain that she ever felt. She just wanted to die. Because a world without Augustus Waters wasn't a world at all.

I was so frustrated with him. “I just want to be enough for you, but I never can be. This can never be enough for you. But this is all you get. You get me, and your family, and this world. This is your life. I’m sorry if it sucks. But you’re not going to be the first man on Mars, and you’re not going to be an NBA star, and you’re not going to hunt Nazis. I mean, look at yourself, Gus.” - Hazel Grace to Augustus Waters.

Hazel was so frustated with Augustus. Because there was nothing that she could do to make him feel better, to make him be healthy again. Augustus was getting worse everyday, and Hazel spent everyday, every hour and minute that she could with him. She was trying to enjoy the most of Augustus while he was still there. Not really taking care of him, but she was his company.
She saw him getting worse, and she knew what it was coming, as she was an expert on the subject, cancer. She looked at him, and she saw that he wasn't the same anymore. He was dying. And then, when they were together at his dining room with a friend of theirs, Issac, who just had an eye taken from him [because he had cancer, too], Hazel realised that, she was the healthiest person in the room, and I suppose that, in that moment, she felt really bad about the fact that Augustus was soon going to die.

“I like this world. I like drinking champagne. I like not smoking. I like the sound of Dutch people speaking Dutch. And now . . . I don’t even get a battle. I don’t get a fight.” - Augustus Waters to Hazel Grace.

As the story goes on, Hazel's life gets more and more complicated. She got really disappointed at the meeting with her favourite writer. He turned out to be a real "douche bag." He didn't even wanted to meet them, he was insane, but well, he's a writer after all.
After this bad part of the day, they went to the Anne Frank museum, and they kissed each other in front of a lot of old people, who clapped and cheered them. After that, Augustus and Hazel went to Augustus' room, at the hotel were they were staying, and, well, you know. She wasn't having a really bad life after all.
But then came the really bad news. Augustus wasn't in remission after all, he was getting worse, his cancer spread everywhere. She didn't know what to say to him, she tried to cheer him up, but she hated when people did that to her, so she stopped. He told her that he was going to do the fight for her, she said that it was her privilege to support him during his fight.

“Oh, I wouldn’t mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.” - Augustus Waters.

At this part of the book, I think that Hazel is, or I believe she always was, worried about the fact that she might die and leave Augustus alone. She was worried about that because, Augustus already lost someone he had a kind of relationship with. It was somehow different though, because he didn't really love this other girl that passed away when they were dating. He said that she was a "bitch." And that he didn't know if she was really like that before getting sick, or it was just the tumor in her brain talking.
Hazel didn't want to do that to him, to die and live him alone, because she was afraid that he might not get over it that easily. He loved her already, but Hazel was different, she wasn't an annoying "bitch" to him. She was nice and always said things that were funny to him. And he really loved her because he used his cancer "wish" to take her to Amsterdam to meet her favourite writer. She really tried not to love Augustus, and tried even harder to make him not to love her. But they were meant for each other, might sound corny but, they had same tastes, same personality, they were the same.

"I tried to tell myself that it could be worse, that the world was not a wish-granting factory, that I was living with cancer not dying of it" - Hazel Grace Lancaster.

This sentence made me realised that this girl, she is super strong. She is decided to live, even though her life is declining day by day. She wants to live even more because of Augustus, who makes it all better. He would tell her things that to her seeemed impossible, like the fact that he is a virgin. Because he is like super attractive. But he thinks that the fact of lacking half a leg makes it more complicated. I wouldn't think so.

Hazel was going on a trip to meet her favourite writter in a few weeks, so she said to her lungs "Keep your shit together". [As she couldn't breathe propertly because of her disease]. This are the kind of things that she says that really sound like me. Yes. I know. I shouldn't talk like that, but it's funny.

There is also one thing about Hazel that I like, because it makes her more of a real person than a character in a book. She doesn't like when people look at her like "Oh, poor thing! She's so strong and brave" because she walks around with her oxygen tank everywhere. If I were in that situation, I would probably never leave my house.

Hazel Grace Lancaster, sixteen years old.

Or just Hazel, as she likes to be called. My first impression, after reading a few very interesting chapters of her life, let's call it, is that she is no ordinary girl. I feel this sort of strange connection with her. Somehow, she is a bit like me. Of course, I am talking about her personality. Because she is a sick girl, unfortunately. She does this unusual comments about things that, might sound awkward to some people, but that are somewhat normal to me. She likes to read books, so, even if she did not say that, I noticed it because of the way she talks. She is really good with words I'd say.
And then there is this part of her that thinks about how we are all going to die someday, and that, that is okay. I think the same way. But unlike her, I do not think about it as often as she does. But after all, she is, indeed, very sick.
I have to give extra credits to this girl, even though she is fictitious, there are probably, many like her in the real world, struggling with a desease like hers, but maybe not as lucky as her to have a boy (very hot, according to her) that has a crush on her. Augustus, the guy that fell in love with her, is a cancer survivor. And, in a way, I would say, he is the male version of her.
